Thousands of children around the world die of starvation or other causes related to malnutrition every single day. This weekend, a group of high school students from Grace Church, Community Bible Church and other area youth groups will be making a difference, learning about hunger and raising money to fight it as they participate in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine.
Area plumbers are also getting on board by donating 2 1/2% of their sales made on Friday, August 26th to the effort.
“What better way to show our youth that we support them in what they do when it comes to raising money for hungry children around the world?” says David Boyer a plumber at Black Mountain Plumbing, Inc who also works with the youth as a pastoral intern at Grace Church. Boyer is organizing the plumbers support as well.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of students, through World Vision International take part in the 30 Hour Famine. They go without food for 30 hours. They learn what it takes to overcome hunger. And they raise funds to help feed hungry children and families around they world.
World Vision International, an evangelical relief organization, is one of the largest relief and development organizations in the world, serving people in nearly 100 countries, In 2008, they had a total revenue including grants, product and foreign donations of $2.6 billion.
The local students will be fasting from Friday at 12:30 pm to Saturday 6:30 pm. During that time they will be doing quiet time, bible studies, and fundraising.
Every $30 raised will feed one hungry child for a month. World Vision International puts the funds to work by bringing emergency food aid to disaster zones and giving families the tools they need to overcome hunger in their communities. Since 1992, when the 30 Hour famine began, the total number of kids under age 5 who die each day — most of them from preventable causes like hunger, poverty, and disease — has fallen from 34,000 to 22,000.
