Recently Black Mountain Plumbing, Inc. made the commitment to train all their plumbers to become accredited green plumbers. The five courses include training on everything from solar hot water to how to conduct a 50-point water audit. Our goal is to be one of the few, licensed Green Plumbers.

So what is green plumbing?

Green plumbing seeks to reduce the carbon footprint homes and businesses leave on the environment. This includes reducing water usage, recycling water that has already been used and using sustainable materials to do so, if possible.

What can  Green Plumbers do for me?

The first thing you can do is to request a water audit. Your green plumbers will then conduct a 50-point environmental inspection and the report will help you work out, in detail, how much water your residence is using, and how much you can save. Many of your water-saving options will also be eligible for government rebates that your on-site Licensed Green Plumber can help you receive. Licensed Green Plumbers have been specially trained in water-efficient technology, climate and water care, and solar hot water. Each inspection report is custom-tailored to your residence’s needs and challenges.

When you reduce your water consumption not only do you save on your water bill, but in an area, that has seen many droughts over the years, you will be much better prepared and may not even be effected by imposed rationing.

How does green plumbing save energy?

Saving water and energy reduces the environmental impact of our society. The transportation of water throughout California, for example, accounts for 19 percent of the state’s electrical use. Saving water saves energy. Plumbers are the face-to-face solution providers for consumers, and efficient plumbing could have an enormous impact on our country’s footprint.

Do I need to change out all of my appliances and fixtures?

Many appliances have greatly improved their performance on using water in recent years. A great example is low flow toilets which only use less than a third, 1.3 gallons per flush, of regular toilets which require 6 gallons per flush. Low flow shower heads and faucets are also available and can greatly reduce water consumption. So you probably should consider a replacing the old with newer more energy efficient models.

Another area to consider is your water heater. Solar thermal water heating is a simple, reliable, and cost-effective technology hat harnesses the sun’s energy to provide for the hot water needs of homes and businesses.

Finally, your dishwasher and clothes washer can also use large amounts of water and energy. Look for appliances that carry the ENERGY STAR label. These dishwashers are on average, 10% more energy efficient and 12% more water efficient than standard models. Clothes washers can be 50% more energy efficient and save up to 6,000 gallons of water a year in an average household.

What about rebates?

There are at time rebates and tax credits that are available from different government agencies. To find out what rebates may be available by green plumbers visit http://www.greenplumbersusa.com/green-plumber-water-rebates-in-your-area

Your green plumber is also trained to help you find rebates as well. Be sure and ask him.
